A half a lifetime as the crow flies
but these 50 years are more than that.
A half a lifetime of ages, of eras,
of phases in which you have loved me
as we grew older and matured, as they say,
like fruit ripening with the cycle
of the sun and stars towards perfection.
Sometimes it's a suprise that people
don't see you and I the way we are inside,
still sometimes fresh and blushing
from the rush back up the aisle.
Fifty years have not diminished
the astonishing perfection of how
you say my name and the way life
has come to make sense only through
proximity to you, the way you hum, your gaze.
The years, pinpricked with the harsh moments,
the struggles, the bleak nights when
one of us thought surely we could not last
one moment more, become a golden haze
in the balance of all we have wrought:
this home, these children and grandchildren,
the warm groove of our life well-worn,
vibrant with the patina of effort and care.
Fifty years. Not so many make it so far, my love.
In this we are blessed, in this steadfastness
and holding to a promise made when we were
almost still children. So long ago, a vow
bound us with hushed breath: to love and to hold
in the storm and the sun, to champion
and succor, to be there every step. And so we have.
And so we will tomorrow and the day after,
as our love grows ever more steadfast and bright.
To my beloved, happy 50th anniversary.
